SpudnikLab created D.Lit, which stands for Digital Literacy - an engaging and user-friendly toolkit designed to help older adults learn to use their mobile phones and other digital technologies with confidence.
Challenge
D.Lit is SpudnikLab’s interactive card deck created to help older adults develop essential digital skills in a group setting with a facilitator. Recognising the need to make the toolkit more inclusive, SpudnikLab engaged 55 Minutes to co-design an add-on pack focused on accessible digital skills for older adults with visual impairments.
Solution
User research to understand the unique challenges of low‑vision learners when using digital devices, and based on findings, design an add-on deck for them in the D.Lit card series.
Results
An anchor document for accessibility
Through in-depth user tests with seniors who have low vision, we uncovered a set of important digital skills - such as enabling accessibility settings, adjusting display preferences such as font size or dark mode. We gathered the insights into a comprehensive document that became the anchor for the rest of our design process, ensuring that every decision was grounded in real user context and accessibility requirements.
A card deck designed for low-vision learners
Based on the insights, we simplified the card deck’s technical language, refined the instructions and enhanced high-contrast visual elements to improve readability. After each testing round, we collaborated closely with SpudnikLab to review the updates, ensuring that every refinement remained aligned with the original user needs and the broader goals of the project.
The D.Lit Add-On Pack now empowers more seniors including those with low vision to participate confidently in Singapore’s digital landscape. This learning tool continues SpudnikLab’s mission of digital literacy, and we are glad to have it shaped alongside them.
“What stood out was the remarkable sensitivity to accessibility of the 55 Minutes team. They made absolutely sure that the final product was inclusive, intuitive and compatible for our audience.”
